Marion, Ill. - The Patriot baseball team earned not one, but two wins today as they took both games against Lincoln Christian University by scores of 11-2 and 4-3. Propelling the team into the win column were a pair of complete game performances by Patriot starters Caleb Cirre and Alex Walker.
Game one started out just on the right note as Caleb Cirre was able to get the Red Lions out 1-2-3 in the top of the first.
In their first glance at the plate, the Patriots scored three runs on two errors and three batters hit by pitches.
Caleb Cirre continued his dominance on the mound by not allowing a single hit and stranding one Red Lion in the top of the second.
The Red Lions showed some fight by plating a run on three Patriot errors, costing Caleb Cirre the shutout while keeping the no-hitter in tact for the time being.
The Patriots responded big in the bottom of the third by pushing across five more runs, drawing the score up to 10-1.
Caleb Cirre's no-hit bid ended in the fourth when LCU's Eric Lattimer singled down the line on a questionable fair/foul call. Nonetheless, the Patriot hurler was able to finish the inning with no damage as he was able to get the next two hitters to record fly-outs.
The rest of the game flew by in the blink of an eye as the Patriots plated a run in the fifth followed by an LCU run in the sixth to bring the game to its final score of 11-2.
Caleb Cirre earned his first collegiate victory and tossed a full seven innings on just 89 pitches. He struck out five and didn't surrender a single walk.
Game two started off on a very similar foot as Alex Walker took the hill and recorded a quick inning after allowing only one hit that just went off the tip of Matt Cirre's outstreched glove at second base.
The Patriots kept their offense alive as LaMarcus O'Neal singled to start the game and was driven in on a double by Matt Cirre. Dalton Ultey then joined the action with bases loaded as he poked a single to left field to score Dennis Glason. Matt Woods followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring in the third run of the inning. LCU would strike out the next two batters to cap the Patriot lead at just 3-0 after one.
Alex Walker went out and paralleled his first inning by only allowing one hit through the hole at second base. A strike out, ground out, and quick play at the plate from catcher Dalton Utley to Alex Walker inked another scoreless inning for the Red Lions.
After the second, the Red Lions responded with a run of their own, drawing the score to 4-1 in favor of Morthland.
The action took a pause until the top of the fifth when LCU finally squared up Alex Walker to bring in two runs, cutting the lead to 4-3.
Morthland's starter would then shut the game down by allowing only one hit in the next two innings to complete his first win of the season on the bump.
The junior from Kentucky ended the night with 134 pitches thrown and six strikeouts. The Patriots recorded nine hits as Matt Cirre chalked up another multi-hit performance by going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
"Incredibly proud of Caleb Cirre and Alex Walker today," said head coach Reid Cure. "We've been preaching about how contagious a good tempo on the mound can be for a team. Those two boys went out there, filled up the zone, and it got the rest of the team rolling and engaged in what was going on."
The boys now get a few days to recoup and pack their bags for Spring Break in Dallas, Texas where they'll take on Dallas Christian College and Oklahome Wesleyan University.
