West Frankfort, Ill. - The Lady Patriots fought hard but lost both games against the Mustangs of Central Baptist College by scores of 4-3 and 12-0.
Game one was a thriller for Patriot fans. The Mustangs started out hot with Whitney Wade smashing a solo shot to kick things off and give CBC the early 1-0 lead.
Morthland pitcher Chelsey Gordon was able to get out of the inning with no further damage though, and get her team to the plate.
It wasn't until the bottom of the second that the Patriot bats would come alive. Cassandra Lujan reached base on a walk which was followed by a Bailey Weldon single. Maranda Chance and Lauren Wilson got into the action with base hits as two runs scored on Wilson's punch.
Gordon then helped her own cause by driving in the third and final run of the inning, giving the Patriots the lead at 3-1.
That lead held for a bit, but it wasn't long before CBC hit their stride. In the top of the fourth, Gordon allowed the Mustangs to plate three runs on three hits, quickly giving CBC back the momentum as they would go ahead 4-3.
Only three hits were recorded the rest of the game and the 4-3 score held up in favor of CBC. The Patriots were threatening in the seventh, but Alyssa Garcia was tagged out at home on a close play.
Chance, Garcia and Wilson all recorded multi-hit games and Wilson drove in two of Morthland's three runs.
Gordon pitched four innings and gave up four earned runs while Raven Talashoma came in and only allowed on hit in her three innings of work.
Game two was not so favorable for the Patriots. Nataleigh Melvin and Talashoma each threw two innings, allowing six runs a piece to give CBC the 12-0 lead.
Morthland just couldn't get the ball rolling on offense as they were held to two hard hits by Chance and Garcia.
The ladies get to host Shawnee Community College tomorrow, March 10. First pitch of the double-header is set for 2:00.
